Usually, it's not mild job or life stress that triggers hair loss, more likely it is extremely serious stress to the body that causes hair to stop growing and fall out. These types of stress can be initiated by some types of medications, diabetes, thyroid disorders and even extreme emotional stress, but also can be caused by commonplace life events like childbirth, miscarriage and surgery. They can cause two types of hair loss :

1. Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium is probably the second most common form of hair loss. In Telogen effluvium, the hair follicles stop growing prematurely and enter into a resting phase. The normal average about 90% hairs are in anagen, 10% in telogen. With telogen effluvium, the anagen ratio may be shifted to 70% anagen, 30% telogen.

A considerable number of different causes for telogen effluvium exist, high fevers, childbirth, major surgery or illnesses. No treatment is needed for most cases, the hairs fall out when a new hair growing beneath it pushes it out. It will grow back within 6 to 9 months.

2. Alopecia areata

Scientists think Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease where white blood cells from the immune system attack hair follicles and keep them from producing hairs. Hair loss tends to be rather rapid and often involves one side of the head more than the other.

It is possible for hair to grow back, and in fifty percent of Alopecia Areata cases, hair grows back without any treatment within a year, and it is possible for the hair to fall out again. But 10% of people with the condition may never regrow their hair, if it hasn't after six months it might be worth considering treatment.
